Spring

We are excited to share the diverse and engaging curriculum we have planned for this term! Year 4 will embark on a journey through various subjects, each designed to challenge and inspire them. Here is a snapshot of some of the things we will be learning.

In Maths, students will face some exciting challenges that build upon their prior knowledge. We aim to make Maths not just educational but also fun and enjoyable for everyone! (Please look at the long-term planning overview to see which topics will be covered weekly.)

In English, we’ll be diving into the captivating story of The Wreck of Zanzibar, where students will get to write a letter in the same style as the author and create a narrative piece using flashbacks. We’ll also read Until I Met Dudley by Ridger McGeough and then delve into Vanishing Rainforests by Richard Platt and The Great Kapok Tree by Lynn Cherry. This will inspire our learners to become passionate activists, crafting persuasive pieces to advocate for the preservation of rainforests.

Our Art and Design sessions will see students studying the fascinating work of Frieda Kahlo during our continent's day study, alongside learning about and recreating the creative pieces of Michael Brennard-Wood, sparking their artistic flair.

Our Design and Technology lessons will involve using textiles to transform a 2D product into a 3D one by designing and creating their own pencil cases. The children will learn sewing techniques to create a functional and attractive product. Plus, they’ll also have the exciting chance to make delicious pizzas with healthy toppings!

In Computing, students will engage with HTML, learn about online safety, and programme a timetables game using Scratch, blending creativity with technical skills.

Music lessons will transport the children to the exciting world of Rock and Roll. They will also create their own Haikus alongside their own composed pieces and perform them in groups, within the classroom.

In PE, we’ll focus on gymnastics and various games, and we’re so excited to start swimming in Spring 2!

Finally, in Science, our students will tackle a STEM challenge to build a kite-powered car. Learning and applying their knowledge of air resistance will make sure that their cars will be able to move unaided. The children will also be exploring the principles of sound.

It’s going to be an exciting and enjoyable term. Please see the attachment below for the full outline for the term.
